8 Haunted Houses in Atlantic Canada to Visit

by Michelle Leave a Comment

Maybe it is the fog rolling in from the ocean. Maybe it is the centuries-old buildings, dark country roads and forests that become pitch black surprisingly early in October. Or perhaps Atlantic Canadians have an unusually healthy enthusiasm for chasing their friends through cornfields with chainsaws. Whatever the reason, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland have some seriously good Haunted attractions.

 Haunted attractions.

1. Fear Farm at RiverBreeze Farm: Upper Onslow, NS

If you only have time for one major haunted attraction this Halloween, RiverBreeze Farm & Cornmaze makes a very strong case. Each October, the farm near Truro transforms into Fear Farm, trading its daytime pumpkins and family-friendly atmosphere for something far more sinister after dark.

Fear Farm is much more than a single haunted house. The experience features five haunted houses and two haunted mazes, including Carn-Evil, Phobia Barn, the Farm House, Pallet Mania, the Zombie Maze, and the Bloodfield Maze. The haunted houses open at 7 p.m., while the corn mazes begin at dusk, giving visitors plenty of time to settle in before the scares really begin.

Fear Farm runs Friday and Saturday nights from October 2 through October 31, making it one of Atlantic Canada’s biggest Halloween attractions and an easy choice for anyone looking to turn a night of scares into a full evening out.

2. Bluenose Ghosts Festival: Dartmouth, Nova Scotia

You don’t have to drive into the middle of nowhere to find a good Nova Scotia scare. At Alderney Landing on the Dartmouth waterfront, the annual Bluenose Ghosts Festival takes over for much of October. The festival runs October 4, 8–11, 15–18 and 21–31. Its roots are also more interesting than the average Halloween attraction: the festival draws inspiration from celebrated Nova Scotia folklorist Helen Creighton and her collection of Maritime ghost stories. But don’t mistake the folklore connection for a quiet historical lecture.

The festival features a haunted mansion and other spooky experiences. Performers and artists also build immersive Halloween attractions on the Dartmouth waterfront. 3. Haunted Mansion, Kensington, Prince Edward Island

Some attractions temporarily build a haunted house every October. Haunted Mansion has the distinct advantage of being creepy all year long. Sitting on a hillside in Kensington, the Tudor-style mansion has become one of PEI’s most recognizable unusual attractions. Visitors travel through three levels of rooms, corridors and dark spaces built around the fictional story of Dr. Jack and his mysterious Whitechapel mansion.

Then October arrives

For Halloween, Haunted Mansion launches its annual Nights of Fear, when the experience becomes considerably more intense, and additional ghouls join the fun. The 2026 Nights of Fear runs on selected dates between October 16 and October 30. Weekend afternoon sessions from 2–4 p.m. are deliberately lighter for younger visitors and people who prefer their Halloween with fewer nightmares. Evening sessions from 6–9 p.m. deliver the full experience.

4. Route 6 Motel, Cavendish, Prince Edward Island

The Haunted Mansion isn’t PEI’s only contender. At the Cavendish Beach Adventure Zone, Route 6 Motel Haunted Experience takes a very different approach. This attraction is less “creepy old mansion” and more “we may have made a serious mistake by entering this building.

Visitors make their way through dark, winding motel corridors filled with extremely low visibility, confined spaces, loud noises, sudden scares, strobe lighting, stairs and uneven surfaces. Route 6 is operating through October 25. The attraction is especially worth considering for visitors who find theatrical haunted mansions a little too predictable. Darkness and disorientation do much of the work here, which creates a very different style of fear.

Good to know: This is one to reconsider if strobe lighting, confined spaces or extremely dark environments are a concern for you.

5. Haunted Carn-Evil of Horror Lutes Mountain, NB

Just outside Moncton, Boyle Family Adventure Farm & Petting Zoo is going from family farm to nightmare fuel for October. The farm’s 2026 nighttime attraction operates October 15–17, 22–24 and 29–30 from 6–10 p.m. Its Haunted Carn-Evil of Horror promises an outdoor horror experience filled with shadowy characters and surprises. This one is particularly convenient for people in Greater Moncton because it delivers a large outdoor Halloween attraction without requiring a major road trip.

The farm also offers daytime, kid-friendly hours on weekends, while the nighttime attraction is deliberately much scarier. Evening admission includes the Halloween-themed Bare Bones Petting Zoo, and the farm plans food vendors and a large communal fire pit to enhance the atmosphere.

That combination makes it more than a quick haunted walk. You can actually hang around, get something to eat and recover your dignity after screaming in front of your friends.

2026 nighttime dates: October 15–17, 22–24 and 29–30.

6. Fletcher’s Farm Haunted Halloween Miramichi, NB

Not everybody wants the same level of terror. Fletcher’s Farm has solved that problem rather cleverly. Its 2026 Haunted Halloween attraction offers three different scare levels.

 Haunted attractions.

Low-scare daytime sessions on October 23 and 24 run without actors. Medium-scare evenings on October 9 and 10 add actors but avoid jump scares. High-scare nights on October 16, 17, 23 and 24 unleash the full version. That makes Fletcher’s especially useful when a group doesn’t agree on how frightening Halloween should be.

Parents can choose something manageable. Nervous adults can pretend the medium version is “for the kids.” And the people who have spent all evening insisting that nothing scares them can be sent into the high-scare version.

7. Lester’s Farm Market Farm Haunt, St. John’s, NF

By day, Lester’s Farm Market is exactly the sort of wholesome farm market where you expect vegetables, plants and baked goods. October evenings are another matter. The 2026 Farm Haunt runs from October 15–24 and is designed for visitors aged 13 and older.

This year’s attraction adds the Forgotten Greenhouse to the traditional farm haunt. Visitors can experience the greenhouse separately or purchase admission to the full Farm Haunt, which includes both attractions. Entry uses timed tickets, and because this is Newfoundland in October, events are weather permitting.

A farm after dark already comes with a natural head start in the creepy department. Throw in an abandoned-style greenhouse and Halloween actors, and there really isn’t much more work required.

Why it stands out: It turns a familiar working farm environment into something completely different once the lights go out.

8. O’Brien Farm After Dark St. John’s Newfoundland

For something more theatrical—and distinctly Newfoundland—head to O’Brien Farm. After Dark isn’t a conventional haunted house at all. Instead, visitors hike through the farm’s woods at night while actors bring haunted stories and eerie tales inspired by Newfoundland and Irish legends to life.

The approximately 50-minute experience operates October 22, 23, 24, 28 and 29 in 2026. It runs rain or shine, is not recommended for young children and has previously sold out quickly. O’Brien Farm

This is exactly the kind of attraction Atlantic Canada should have more of. Rather than importing generic horror themes, After Dark uses the landscape and the region’s storytelling traditions as part of the scare. And walking through the Newfoundland woods at night while someone tells you what might be hiding in them seems like an extremely effective way to make sure you walk a little faster.

Why it stands out: Local folklore, live actors and an actual nighttime forest give this one a completely different atmosphere.

2026 dates: October 22–24 and 28–29.

Which Haunted Attraction Should You Visit?

That depends on what scares you. If you want a huge night with multiple haunted houses and mazes, Fear Farm is one of the most complete experiences in the region.

If classic haunted houses are more your thing, PEI’s Haunted Mansion is difficult to beat.

For darkness and claustrophobic scares, Route 6 Motel takes things in another direction entirely.

Around New Brunswick, Boyle Farm gives Greater Moncton a serious Halloween attraction of its own, while Fletcher’s Farm is particularly good for groups that want to choose how intense the experience will be.

And Newfoundland offers perhaps the most distinctly Atlantic Canadian experiences of the bunch: Lester’s turns an actual farm into a horror attraction, while O’Brien Farm mixes nighttime woods with traditional Newfoundland and Irish storytelling.

The best approach may be not choosing just one.

October is a very good excuse for an Atlantic Canadian road trip.

Before You Go

Atlantic Canada in October can deliver beautiful fall weather one evening and sideways rain that feels personally insulting the next.

For outdoor haunts, wear footwear that can handle mud and uneven ground. Check the attraction’s website or social pages shortly before leaving, particularly for weather-dependent events. Buy advance tickets when available because the most popular Friday and Saturday nights can sell out.

Also pay attention to sensory warnings. Strobe lights, fog, extremely dark spaces, loud noises, confined areas and sudden scares are common at serious haunted attractions.

And remember that “family-friendly Halloween attraction” and “haunted house suitable for children” are not necessarily the same thing. Several attractions on this list specifically offer lighter daytime experiences for a reason.

Atlantic Canada Was Made for Halloween

There are places where Halloween has to work hard to create atmosphere. Atlantic Canada is not one of them.

We’ve already got the dark forests, old farms, coastal fog, historic buildings and generations of ghost stories. Add October leaves, cold nights and a few strategically placed creatures in the corn, and most of the work is done.

From Dartmouth to Cavendish, Moncton to Miramichi and St. John’s to rural Nova Scotia, there are enough genuinely good haunted attractions to make Halloween 2026 one of the best times of the year to explore Atlantic Canada.

Just remember one important rule

If someone in your group spends the entire drive insisting haunted houses aren’t scary, make them go first.
