How to Make Your Basement a Cheerful and Cosy Space

May 17, 2022 by Michelle Leave a Comment

Basements tend to have a reputation for being dark, dreary, and even scary. However, it doesn’t have to remain this way! There are plenty of ways to make this space a warm and welcoming space for you and your guests.

basement

To transform this area, here are the top tips that you can follow:

Hire a Good Contractor

.If your basement is unfinished, then your first order of business is to make sure that it is a habitable space. One of the biggest problems with this part of the house is the risk of moisture, water damage, and flooding – just ask Mr Solomon, owner of Penguin Basements – These are the tasks that they are most often called to tackle.

This is why you should always start by making sure that any cracks or other issues are fixed up. Take the necessary precautions to reduce the risk of flooding in the future. And, check to see if there may be any mould or mildew that you need to get rid of.

Add Lots of Lighting

The next thing that you should do is to fill this space with lighting. Start with ceiling lights and fixtures on the wall. Make sure to space these out evenly throughout the room so that there are no dark corners. You should also be careful of the shades that you use – make sure these don’t block out too much of light.

At the same time, play around with the light in the room. Use floor lamps and desk lamps to create lighting at all levels of the room. For added ambience, you can use candles as well. The more light there is, the better!

Paint the Walls

As you are well aware, lighter colours automatically make a room look and feel lighter. However, you do need to be a bit more careful when choosing the wall colours for your basement. After all, even lighter hues such as white or light greys can make the space feel rather stark.

As long as it fits in with the colour scheme that you have got going on upstairs, look for warmer tones such as yellows and oranges. Green and blues can work too. Of course, you can feel free to get zany with your colour choices as well.

Use Furniture and Décor to Your Advantage

Try to use plush furnishing inside of bare wood wherever possible. This automatically makes the space feel cosier. In addition to a couch, consider Ottomans, and plush stools as well. There’s no need to stop here, either.

Bright, colourful throw pillows and blankets can be strategically draped around the room as well. Use lots of cheerful pictures and artwork to brighten up the space as well. Fragrance can be a powerful tool as well – use a diffuser that gives out warm and spicy scents throughout the space.

It can be tricky to make your basement a warm and cheerful space but it is certainly not impossible. Now that you know the options available to you, you can get to remodelling and decorating the space while adding your own personal touch to it.
