Our two daughters love to draw and create fun pictures. They also truly enjoy animals and all forms of sea life. The first time I heard of the Art Challenge, I was intrigued. The idea of such a broad art challenge that was open all schools in the United States, is something that really impressed me and made me want to take a closer look into the challenge.
Founded by world-renowned environmental artist, conservationist and muralist Wyland, the Wyland Foundation is inviting classrooms across the United States to take part in the“National ‘Water is Life” Mural and Art Challenge.” It is a nationwide environmental mural and individual art contest celebrating ocean, lakes, rivers, streams, and wetlands.
The 2015 theme is “Our Coasts and Climate.” The contest runs through Nov. 25, 2015.
Teachers are invited to create with their students a 5-foot by 8-foot mural painting to celebrate how water shapes our lives and our world. A mural canvas will be provided in a random drawing to 100 participating classrooms who register before August 15.
Contest Categories Include Grades:
- K-4:
- 5-8:
- 9-12:
The class in each category, whose mural best expresses their understanding of, and appreciation for water, as it relates to this year’s theme, “Our Coasts and Climate,” will receive $250 for art supplies and a chance to receive a live online painting lesson by Wyland.
Winning classes will each receive a signed Wyland artwork for display at their school. Schools may register multiple classes. However, only one free mural kit per school is permitted.

Much of the insights Wyland gained from traveling the world are incorporated into the Wyland Foundation’s National Art and Mural Challenge. This year’s theme, “Our Coasts and Climate,” is a national effort to broaden student understanding about human activities that contribute to climate change. It is part of our foundation’s effort to encourage students to explore the issues behind climate change and work collaboratively to create artworks based on their findings.
